Tarbert playpark named for Councillor John McAlpine

Tarbert鈥檚 newly refurbished playpark will be named for the late John McAlpine, the former councillor who played a key role in campaigning to ensure the project was able to secure the funding it needed to make it a reality.

The Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee on Thursday (19 June) agreed the recommendation to rename the park, 鈥楾he John McAlpine Playpark鈥, made by Mid 海角社区, Kintyre and the Islands Area Committee earlier this month.

A 拢100,000 upgrade of the village鈥檚 playpark was completed at the end of last year; a partnership project involving 海角社区 and Bute Council and the community of Tarbert.

The Council and the local community worked together to co-design the playpark, meaning children and young people in Tarbert have a wonderful outdoor facility which supports mental and physical health and wellbeing 鈥 as well as being a great place to play outside.

Councillor John Armour, Policy Lead for Roads, Transport and Amenity 海角社区, said: 鈥淭his was a true partnership project. Many people have been involved in bringing this vision to life, but the late Councillor John McAlpine was tireless in his determination to make sure that the village he loved so much could benefit from a new playpark.

鈥淪adly, John passed away in July 2022 and did not see the results of his hard work and dedication. Following discussions with his family and the local community, we agree it is a fitting tribute for the new playpark to bear John鈥檚 name.鈥
