Next steps approved for Tobermory Campus

海角社区 and Bute Councillors today agreed a statutory education consultation, as part of proposals to relocate the existing 2-18 campus to a new location to the southern edge of Tobermory next to the A848 (Tobermory South).

The consultation, in accordance with the requirements of the marks the next significant milestone as 海角社区 and Bute Council aims to create a new campus. It will offer a more attractive learning environment, access to modern technology and opportunities for wider learning and vocational training.

The education consultation opens in August for a six-week period. The guidance under the Act sets out clearly the steps required of the Council who will work closely with Education Scotland to consult with statutory consultees. Read more details in the report.

Plans for the new purpose-built campus will include a number of improvements including, a more attractive learning environment, access to modern technology, improved accessibility and indoor and outdoor learning spaces. Facilities will include a science laboratory, technology workshop, a home economics room, music suite and library. Tobermory South will also provide opportunities for use outside school hours to help meet the learning, leisure and social needs of children, young people and the community.

Councillor Audrey Forrest, Policy Lead for Education:

鈥淭his is another important milestone as we look to relocate our existing campus to Tobermory South. As we work on a concept design to form our overall business case, we look forward to working with young people, staff and our consultees to understand their requirements with the layout of the new building.

With no changes to management and relocating close to the existing campus, we hope to minimise disruption and open more doors for our young people to learn and thrive.鈥

The opportunities that a campus brings to our young people is an exciting prospect, not only for current pupils but for future generations to come.鈥

Who will we consult with?

Under the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010 (the 2010 Act), if a local authority proposes to relocate a school, it must consult with the relevant consultees affected by the proposal. For the relocation of the existing 2-18 Campus, this includes:

  • Tobermory ELC
  • Tobermory Primary
  • Tobermory High

and the following associated primary schools:

  • Dervaig Primary School
  • Salen Primary Gaelic and English medium School and ELCs
  • Lochdonhead Primary School and
  • Ulva Primary School

A report with feedback from statutory consultees will go to Education Scotland before coming back to Councillors at the end of 2025.
