Local young people promote bin stickers in Mid 海角社区 and Tarbert

Schools in Mid 海角社区 and Tarbert are supporting a trial to encourage people in the area to recycle more and better.

Children in Lochgilphead, Glassary and Tayvallich primaries have volunteered to take stickers home, to place on their blue recycling bins, to remind everyone exactly what they can recycle.

Pupils from Tarbert Academy will also deliver the stickers to homes in the village to promote the recycling message.

Their efforts will help encourage local people to recycle more and protect the services we all care about, continuing the great work school pupils did to promote recycling on the Council鈥檚 social media over Christmas.

Making sure we put the right things in the right bins is vital to ensuring we do all we can to make the most of local recycling services.

Data from waste composition analyses carried out last year showed that 10% of the rubbish in the green general waste bins could have been recycled in the blue bins. What鈥檚 more, 20% of what was found in the blue bins sampled should not have been there; items like soft plastic bags, glass, and textiles.

Blue bins are for plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, paper, cardboard, cans, tins, aerosols, aluminium foil and trays, and tetrapaks. Full details of what can be recycled, and where, are also on the website

Policy Lead for Roads, Transport and Amenity 海角社区, Councillor John Armour, said:

鈥淥ur young people did a great job over Christmas when they were reminding us that we really need to recycle. Here they are stepping up again, so many thanks for leading the way in protecting the environment. It also helps protect the council services we all value.

鈥淚 would urge everyone to use the recycling services available to them where they live. If you don鈥檛 already have a blue bin, or could make use of an additional one, they are free. Please contact us.

鈥淭here is information on our website to help you remember what you can recycle, as well as tips on how to reduce things like food waste, or re-use left overs or home items that still have some life in them.

鈥淭o help you recycle, we have free stickers you can place on your bin to remind you what goes in it. You can collect one from your local customer service point.鈥

The customer service point for Mid 海角社区 is at 1A Manse Brae, Lochgilphead PA31 8RD. It is open to customers from 9am 鈥 12pm.

Julien Dessans, teacher at Tarbert Academy who leads the Eco Schools committee, says:

鈥淥ur Eco-Schools committee works hard to promote environmental issues in the school. We鈥檙e happy to be able to help the Council promote recycling in our village. It fits in well with things we already do like collecting used printer cartridges, batteries and clothing to make sure they are disposed of, or re-used, properly. Once again, we hope the village gets behind us and puts their stickers on their blue bins to help them remember what should go in there.鈥

You can order a blue recycling bin from the council website. You can also find out what happens to the things you recycle.
